There are several steps to fixing a paper jam in your HP desktop printer. For detailed, step-by-step instructions, watch YouTube. First, clear the paper jam from the rear section of the unit. Next, make sure the front of the printer is cleared. After clearing the entire device, it is best to remove any leftover paper from the input tray. Once the machine is devoid of any media, turn it off.

Now, turn the back of the printer towards you and unplug the power cord to ensure that the unit is completely shut down. Also on the back of the device is a rear access door, which should promptly be removed once the device is turned off. After the panel is removed you may or may not see a sheet of paper jammed towards the rear of the unit. If you observe that there is paper in the printer, remove it evenly with both hands to avoid tearing. In the case of torn paper, make sure to double check the rollers and wheels for any small scraps of paper. If you don’t closely inspect for every piece of torn paper, it is likely that your device will continue to jam when printing.

Once you’ve made sure the printer is clear of paper, reinsert the rear access panel to its respective place. Now, turn the computer back around to the front and lift the top lid of the printer. Continue to scan for paper shreds and remove any you find. Again, make sure you leave no paper behind in the machine.

If you have successfully removed all the bits of paper that jammed our printer, you may now plug it back in and turn it on. Too ensure that the problem has been resolved, print a self-test page. If the page prints without trouble you have effectively fixed your paper jam problem.
